Co-founder and Executive Director of Solar Energy International (SEI). SEI is an established non-profit organization with the mission to help others learn about Renewable Energy. Johnny is a solar educator, consultant, certified Industrial Trainer and solar building professional. Johnny is a Master PV Trainer and a Principle author of SEI's new textbook, Photovoltaics - Manual of Design & Installation. SEI is Accredited by the Institute for Sustainability (ISP) to offer training that can lead to PV certification by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). He has over twenty years experience teaching the practical applications of the renewable energy technologies of solar, wind, and water power. As an Associate Professor for ten years at Colorado Mountain College, he helped develop and teach a hands-on vocational training program in solar thermal, photovoltaics, energy efficiency and construction skills. Johnny has extensive practical experience as a natural house builder and licensed general contractor. Johnny regularly works with Native American Train the Trainers programs. Johnny also works in international sustainable development programs and projects helping transfer renewable energy technologies to the developing world. Under his direction, SEI regularly works under contract for organizations including: The World Bank, the Pan American Health Organization, the Native American Renewable Energy Education Program, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

M.S. Environmental Systems, Thesis title: Planning and Design for a Native American Appropriate Technology Center for the Great Lakes Anishinaabe Community. Completed Basic and Advanced PV Design and Installation training at Solar Energy International, CO, and Advanced PV Design and Installation and Advanced Straw Bale Construction at the Solar Living Institute, CA. PennElys has worked with and studied various renewable energy systems, sustainable building strategies and materials, alternative wastewater treatment methods, composting toilets, and water conservation methods and technologies since 1996, and has been involved in environmental work in the Native American community since 1998.
